Nice, I also always like going back to the original. A similar situation happened to me playing Stablemates. Golson's first bar just makes more sense to me harmonically and vibe-wise, than Miles' version. :)

We weren't initially planning on playing this tune this tour, but Luther heard my solo piano recording of "Wave" and said 'this is a nice performance, BUT I don't think those are the original chord changes.' Bijan I want to say I think your standard Changes deserves to become as much a staple in the repertoire as something like Stella by Starlight or Beautiful Love. Love the different takes on it with Triogram and with Mr. Hughes.

🚨OUT NOW: FULL 1st Set with MAESTRO LUTHER HUGHES 🎻 from our duo concert at Jazz at the Merc (Temecula, CA) 5.16.24! Legendary bassist, Luther Hughes, gives Bijan his flowers: “I’m going to go on the record and say Bijan is one of my heroes. He is an amazing jazz educator, I call him up all the time and say: ‘what do you like to do in this spot?’ He is an amazing musician, composer and a really, really nice person.” But truth be told, Luther is my hero. His resume speaks for itself (Gene Harris Quartet, Horace Silver, Carmen McRae, etc), but you would never know from talking to him because he is so humble in his approach. He was a pivotal figure for me in my jazz development growing up in Southern California and continues to be a mentor, collaborator and friend. We speak on the phone almost every week ranging from conversations about our students to him advising me on what to do with my car! Playing with him on this special tour will forever be one of the highlights of my life - his sound and sense of groove is unmatched, and his interplay makes him a joy to play with. Footage from our recent tour (duo & trio shows) will be released soon, starting with the FULL 1st set from our duo show which is OUT NOW!

**6/19/24 UPDATE: For those who may have already seen this set uploaded last week and wondering why this is being re-uploaded, this version includes a new 3rd camera angle from the back center of the room, courtesy of Randy Kojaku. Huge thanks to Randy! Luther and I have a rich history together as mentor-mentee, collaborators and friends; we last played together at Jazz at the Merc in Temecula, CA “the day before the world shut down” in March 2020. It was only fitting that our first time performing together in over 4 years would be back at the Merc exploring the ART OF THE DUO. Sit back, relax and join us on this journey as we explore a couple original tunes, a couple Horace Silver tunes that Luther played with the composer himself, a couple Jobim tunes and Luther's "favorite Easter tune" (East of the Sun).
